Academic strengths

The University offers an exceptionally wide range of subjects for undergraduate and postgraduate study. 37 subject areas achieved 5 or 5* in the most recent Research Assessment Exercise (RAE), and over half of the University s departments have attained maximum scores of excellence in external teaching assessments.

Several new interdiscliplinary research institutes have been created, which further enrich the range and breadth of specialist research groups and centres at The University of Manchester. Manchester is a city with a world famous reputation for sport and culture. The city is home to some of Britain s finest art galleries, theatres, museums and live music popular, underground and classical.

Manchester is one of the UK s premier destinations for international cuisine and there are restaurants to suit all tastes. Manchester s multi-cultural population means that it is easy to shop for traditional foods, and students are able to source many of the products they have at home. Manchester has, for example, the largest Chinatown in the UK.

The city has excellent links for transport. Manchester International Airport, the UK s third largest airport, has daily direct flights all across the world. There are also extensive road and rail links to the rest of the UK and beyond.

ACCOMMODATION

Manchester is pleased to be able to guarantee all single full-time students paying international fees a place in university-managed accommodation, with a free internet connection, for the duration of their programme.

The University of Manchester offers more accommodation spaces than any other university in the UK (over 9,200 in 32 different halls of residence). University-managed accommodation ranges from modern self-catering flats to traditional catered halls and is on or close to the campus. We also offer single-sex accommodation and most rooms have private telephone lines. The choice and variety of accommodation means there is something to suit every taste and budget. All halls have leisure amenities and social clubs in addition to 24 hour security and a team of wardens to help if students have any questions.

Some accommodation is available for students with partners and/or children however Manchester Student Homes can help students who wish to rent in the private sector.

FACILITIES

The John Rylands Library, the third biggest library in the UK, holds more than four million separate items. Living Costs

Living costs in Manchester compare well to other major UK cities and are much less expensive than London. As a guide for the 2006-7 session we estimated that a student would need £6,900 for a 9 month stay (undergraduate year), or £9,000 for a 12 month stay (postgraduate year). It is also imporant to be aware that if you bring your family or partner with you, or have any additional support needs, living costs may be higher. More information will be sent to students during the admissions cycle.

Entry requirements

Many overseas qualifications meet the University s general entry requirements both at undergraduate and postgraduate level. Please visit the website for more information. Individual admissions officers for different programmes of study will be able to advise students on the acceptability of their qualifications. British Council offices in home countries may also be able to help.

English language requirements

Students must have achieved a certain level of English language ability bore starting their programme of study at Manchester. The requirement varies depending both on the programme of study (academic subject) and the level of programme (undergraduate, postgraduate taught/research). The minimum score required is usually 6.0 IELTS or equivalent for undergraduates and 6.5 IELTS or equivalent for postgraduates. More linguistically demanding programmes such as Law or Management will require higher scores. Foundation programmes require from 5.5 IELTS.
