The University of Ulster (Ulster), the largest university on the island of Ireland, offers you quality and excellence in teaching and research. We have a student population of approximately 28,000 from nearly 80 countries worldwide. At Ulster we are committed to providing quality teaching, learning and research, and continuous support to all our international students. We realise that you are making an important decision about coming to study here. Ulster is in Northern Ireland, one of the four regions that make up the United Kingdom. We have four campuses Belfast, Jordanstown, Coleraine and Magee in Derry.

Academic strengths

Bachelor s degrees at Ulster generally last for either three or four years. Applications for undergraduate degrees should be made through the University and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS). The Ulster institution code is U20. You can find a full list of all our undergraduate degrees at

Taught Master s programmes at Ulster usually involve one year of full-time study consisting of nine months taught modules and three months completing a dissertation. You can find a full list of our postgraduate degrees and apply on-line at the University s website at

The University s Research Institutes comprise high calibre research staff supported by highly qualified technical support staff and doctoral and postdoctoral research staff. The six faculties of the University have Research Graduate Schools.

Facilities

The Accommodation Service at Ulster University has experienced, friendly staff based at each campus, and they can provide comprehensive guidance and support to help you find a home which is right for you. We want you to enjoy your time of study with us. No matter which campus you choose to study at you will enjoy our excellent facilities. All of our campuses have a state of the art Learning Resource Centre (LRC) or library.

We aim to offer support for all aspects of your personal and academic life while you are a student at Ulster. A comprehensive range of confidential health care is provided by a team of experienced Registered Nurses and as you will be living away from home you will be required to register with a local doctor.

At Ulster we have excellent sporting facilities to help you keep healthy and get fit. There are numerous sports and events that you can participate in. We are proud to be a centre for Sporting Excellence and are host to the Sports Institute for Northern Ireland.

Student life

We offer all our international students a one-week orientation programme prior to the beginning of Semester One. This gives you the opportunity to familiarise yourself with the campus and to make new friends. The programme will include workshops that are designed to give you guidance and support, and will help you to adapt to your new life at Ulster. An orientation programme also takes place at the beginning of Semester Two. Other staff in student support will be here to help with counselling, health and related matters, once you become a student. Staff within the International Office can guide you during the application and admission process and can also give you visa and immigration advice once you are a student at the University of Ulster.

The Centre for English Languages, which forms part of the International Office, offers English language support to all students who are non-native speakers of English.

LOCATION

The Belfast campus is situated near the city centre and is close to plenty of shops, bars, cafes and clubs. The south of the city is the traditional student quarter with a good range of moderately -priced restaurants, pubs, theatres and shops.

The Coleraine campus is the administrative headquarters for the University and located a short distance to the north of the town. The campus has a warm and friendly atmosphere and a strong sense of community.

The Jordanstown campus is located a few miles north of Belfast. The proximity of the campus to Belfast is a major attraction for students who often chose to live in the city and travel to the campus on the excellent rail, bus and taxi links.

The Magee campus, Londonderry, is a mixture of historical and new buildings and modern and traditional facilities. The Magee campus has a small and tightly knit student population. Past and present students often mention this as one of the benits of studying there.

FACILITIES

Personal Development Planning (PDP) is a structured process to enable you to take control of and rlect upon your learning, performance and achievements. This may sound like a lot of hard work but in fact, it is simply an organised way of getting the most out of your time at the University of Ulster.

You will be introduced to PDP at induction and directed to the University s Personal Development System (PDSystem) to support the online recording of your experiences. The PDSystem is secure, confidential and user friendly and enables you to: link to the students record system; record and store evidence, thoughts and plans; create career, personal and academic plans; communicate with programme teams; check examination results; build multiple CVs; maintain personal journal/diary; create and share an e-portfolio.

IT User Services provides and maintains IT laboratories throughout the University, as well as personal computer areas in the Learning Resource Centres (LRCs). Each personal computer has a Common Desktop Environment (CDE) with a core group of software applications. Additional subject-specific software complements the core set of applications. Students access the CDE via their personal Single Sign-On account The University has a number of modern Learning Resource Centres and offers free internet access and 24-computer labs.

The University is a natural focus for arts and culture and we have an extensive arts programme. Our excellent facilities and resources provide a showcase for internationally renowned and distinguished artists as well as local performers. In partnership with the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, we fund a Writers-in-Residence scheme which allows you direct access to outstanding creative practitioners.

We have a strong tradition of sporting achievement. This is rlected in a high standard of both sporting and academic excellence. A wide range of sports clubs, high profile sporting awards ceremonies and an innovative sports scholarship scheme all contribute to this important aspect of university life. The University of Ulster really is the place to get into sport - with hundreds of students playing sport with Team UU every day. There are over 65 student clubs across all campuses, encompassing over 1500 Sports Union members participating in sport Sporting clubs range from athletics, association football, gaelic football, hurling and hockey through to ju-jitsu, fencing, sub-aqua, mountaineering and rowing.
