  The United States remains a leading nation of choice for international students seeking a world class higher education system. The diversity of colleges and universities in all 50 states is extraordinary. While there are numerous factors to consider bore making a final choice, there is an important aspect of the American higher education system which sets it apart and provides an important incentive for international students to study at an American institution. This is the unique administrative division on every campus commonly called student affairs or student services. Within the cluster of these student-focused services is the office of career services.

  Because study in the U.S. is likely to have a long-term impact upon the career direction and professional aspirations of an international student, it’s important to understand this unique aspect of campus life in the United States. The primary function of the professionals who staff offices of career services is to enable and empower students to focus more intensely on their studies and their personal growth and maturation.

  The office of career services better prepares students to enter the global workforce by linking their academic study to their career goals. They do so in many ways:

  Strengthening their career “toolkit” including a resume, cover letter, enabling them to articulate knowledge, skills and abilities in both written and oral communication with targeted employers

  Providing learning experiences which prepare students for all aspects of their job search: eg: informational interviews, networking, fective communications

  Building capacity to articulate intellectual and intercultural competencies gained as a result of study in the U.S.

  Educating students about range of employment options open to them given their major course of study and prerence for work in different sectors [in the U.S. or home country]

  Educating students about market forces and hiring trends which will impact their entry into the global workforce [in the U.S., a third country or upon return home]

  Career service offices operate on the assumption that there is a transparent bridge between the classroom and the workplace. Since this level of transparency between academia and the workplace is not common in the developing world, students have the opportunity to gain skills and insights about steps they can take to strengthen their job search and become strong candidates for jobs after graduation.

  A central tenet of career advisors on U.S. campuses in preparing students to enter the workforce –and ensure greater success in obtaining employment- is that there are core skills and competencies a student can strengthen to advance their job searches. International students will be challenged, in a positive way, to:

  Another valuable asset for international students is access to internships and other forms of experiential learning which add great value to their career “toolkits.” Career offices actively maintain relationships to employers for this purpose –and alumni often are key contacts to mentor such opportunities for undergraduates.

  International students have the option of working in the United States after graduation and staff in the office of career services, along with the international student advisor, will provide information and advice on how to take advantage of these options. Practical training is a legal means by which F-1 students can obtain employment in areas related to their academic field of study. Students, in general, must have completed one academic year (approximately nine months) in F-1 status and must maintain this status to be eligible for practical training. There are two types of practical training: Optional Practical Training or Curricular Practical Training.

  Instead of seeking employment directly after graduation (an option pursued more often in difficult economic times such as the present), many international students choose to continue their higher education in a Masters or Doctorate-level graduate program. The range of such advanced degree options at U.S. institutions is vast and embraces all careers and sectors of employment. Career staff can put students in touch with alumni to provide insights into the opportunities and challenges of post-graduate education.
