  Sociology Personal Statement

As a young girl wandering through the city centre of India, I was both amazed and shocked to see how different this world was to my own in UK. The injustices people faced and the lack of formal socialisation which they had not received was hard to ignore and impossible not to discuss. Why were women so passive? Why was there a stigma attached to being divorced? Studying sociology has helped me to understand and even answer some of my questions. Society is forever changing and with that, legislations and laws too; which not only affects the way I function but society as a whole. For this reason, Sociology compels me to study it in greater depth.

Feminism, as a theoretical concept has captured my attention in terms of recognising how a form of secondary socialisation could reinforce the patriarchal nature of modern society. The realisation of how education plays a part in fuelling gender socialisation inspired me to explore why males are in positions of power and authority. The propensity of getting to grips with the vast number of different perspectives which Sociology brings is without a doubt, a truly captivating field with room for new research and further deliberation.

Studying Psychology at A level has been benicial to me as it has allowed for me to look into the minds of others to analyse their behaviour, which can then be linked to how it affects society on a larger scale. This also demonstrates my ongoing fascination and enthusiasm to discover the nature of humankind within social groups and societies. Learning the key concepts of Citizenship such as human rights, has opened my mind to a whole new dimension of Sociology and made me realize that I want to take my knowledge of Sociology to a degree level.

Outside of my academic studies, participation in various sports such as badminton and aerobics helps to keep me active and is certainly something I would like to continue at university. Entering RAF badminton tournaments has helped me to be sociable with people from diverse backgrounds. I contribute regularly towards college events including applying for a position as student ambassador. A great time is dedicated to my love of literature, from reading novels by Thomas Hardy to Jane Austen, from this I have noticed how childhood has changed overtime to today&aposs contemporary society. Travelling is something I wish to take on after I have completed my degree and to be a part of the local Rahma voluntary work scheme; helping disadvantaged people in Kosovo and Indonesia, which will also allow for cultural comparisons to be noted.

I am a confident student and aim to challenge any obstacles which could deny me of my right and path to success. My part-time job at Boots has boosted my confidence, communication and team-working skills, therore conversing ideas precisely has become second nature to me. University will require great fort; however with my education and understanding I am positive higher education will offer me the right opportunity to reach my potential.

Being able to keep on top of deadlines, social life, work life and continuing with leisure activities has proved that not only can I manage a busy schedule, but I&aposve developed the skills essential to thrive at university; not only as an individual, but as an aspiring Sociologist too.
