艾萨克·牛顿（Sir Isaac Newton，1643－1727），英国皇家学会会员，位英国物理学家、数学家、天文学家、自然哲学家、炼金术士，著有《自然哲学的数学原理》等科学著作，并推动了科学革命。1727年3月31日，伟大的艾萨克·牛顿逝世。同其他很多杰出的英国人一样，他被埋葬在了威斯敏斯特教堂，成为史上第一个获得国葬的自然科学家。他的墓碑上镌刻着：让人们欢呼这样一位多么伟大的人类荣耀曾经在世界上存在。
Newton, Sir Isaac (1642-1727), mathematician and physicist, one of the foremost scientific intellects of all time. He entered Cambridge University in 1661 and remained at the university until 1696. Of these Cambridge years, in which Newton was at the height of his creative power, he singled out 1665-1666 as "the prime of my age for invention".
During two to three years of intense mental fort he prepared Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica (Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy) commonly known as the Principia, although this was not published until 1687. He has been regarded for almost 300 years as the founding examplar of modern physical science.
科学贡献
