　　第一次世界大战期间美国记者海明威作为青年志愿者到意大利参战。在自己负伤的情况下还背着另一名伤员撤往救护所，并在途中再次腿部中弹。醒来时他看到护士艾格尼丝美丽的眼睛。尽管他比护士小八岁但他还是疯狂地爱上了她。但他有两个情敌;医生卡拉齐奥洛和病友亨利。重伤员吉姆不堪忍受伤痛的折磨自杀身亡。他临死前口授了一封给父母的诀别信在艾格尼丝手上。海明威重写了这封信，使其格调大为改观。深受感动的艾格尼丝第一次接受了海明威的拥抱。但两人的恋情终未他们结成连理海明威回到美国后等到的是艾格尼丝与卡拉齐奥洛定婚的消息。
