San Francisco’s Public Works department have taken new steps to tackle the on-going and notorious problem of public urination in the city. 10 walls have been coated with a product named Ultra-Ever Dry, developed by Florida-based company Ultra Tech. Ultra-Ever Dry is a “superhydrophobic and oleophobic coating that will repel most water-based and some oil-based liquids”, meaning that any individual attempting to urinate on the treated walls may have their waste squirted back at them. It is hoped that this will deter offenders and prevent the need for special steam cleaning treatments in the city.

为解决一直以来臭名昭著的随地小便问题，旧金山公共工程部采取了一些新的举措。目前已在10面墙上刷了名为“超级干”的涂层，这种新型材料由来自佛罗里达的公司Ultra Tech研发。“超级干”材料“具有超疏水性和疏油性，能阻挡大部分水基及一部分油基的液体”，这就意味着任何打算在这些墙前面小便的人都会被自己溅一身。通过这项举措，公共工程部希望能够打消市民随地小便的念头，以免日后不得不对城市进行特殊的蒸汽式清洁。

New scholarship to offer American students the opportunity to study in the UK美国学生的福音：去英国留学有新奖学金啦!

The Fulbright Commission, an educational programme that “fosters mutual cultural understanding through educational exchange” between the US and the UK, has introduced the Fulbright-Northumbria University Award. This scholarship will enable an American student to study a facet of Art and Design at Northumbria University either as a one-year Master’s course, or as part of a longer Master’s degree or PhD. Rob Carthy, Directory of International Development at Northumbria University, has stated that the chosen student would “experience the academic excellence of the University and its fantastic facilities, as well as the city of Newcastle where we are based, which is very vibrant in terms of arts, design and culture.”

Dentist who killed Cecil the lion facing extradition美牙医杀死非洲狮或将被引渡

Walter Palmer, a dentist from Bloomington, Minnesota, has provoked global outrage after luring a lion out of protection in Hwange National Park and shooting it with a crossbow and a gun. Cecil was a “known, local favourite” and tourist attraction at Hwange, and was being tracked by conservationists at Oxford University via satellite. It is suggested that Palmer participated in, and paid $50,000 for, an illegal hunt under Zimbabwe’s Parks and Wildlife Act; an online petition calling for Palmer’s extradition has already gained over 500,000 signatures in the country.

Discovery of skeletons in Virginia believed to be founders of first permanent English settlement弗吉尼亚新发现骷髅属于英国第一个永久殖民地的建立者们

Researchers from the Jamestown Rediscovery Foundation and the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History have identified four skeletons as the remains of the leaders of the Virginia settlement. Excavated from a burial spot in church grounds “reserved for only elite members of the community”, it is thought that the remains belong to the settlement’s first Anglican minister, an explorer, and the governor of colonial Virginia’s relatives.

Venomous Brown Recluse spiders force students into hiding毒性褐皮花蛛逼得学生躲猫猫

Montgomery Elementary School in Pennsylvania has been forced to close temporarily as pest management seek to exterminate venomous spiders that have been found nesting on the school’s premises. The Brown Recluse spiders were found in the school’s kitchen and library, and are known to prer dry and undisturbed habitats such as woodpiles, sheds, and cellars. The school is confident that the pest control measures will be successful, but will hereafter be taking extra precautions such as removing cardboard from classrooms (cardboard is a like environment to the tree bark that spiders inhabit).
