This project is part of a 4-year Dual PhD degree programme between the National Tsing Hua University (NTHU) in Taiwan and the University of Liverpool in England. As Part of the NTHU-UoL Dual PhD Award students are in the unique position of being able to gain 2 PhD awards at the end of their degree from two internationally recognised world leading Universities. As well as benefiting from a rich cultural experience, Students can draw on large scale national facilities of both countries and create a worldwide network of contacts across 2 continents. To meet the rapid development of wireless communications and imaging, this project is aimed to develop a high-performance integrated THz transmitter module which will include the source (oscillator) and antenna. This approach will not only remove the connections between components in the conventional transmitter but also make the device smaller. Another key issue is to enhance the conversion efficiency of the transmitter hence more power. The transmitter will be based on an MMIC Gallium-Nitride (GaN) oscillator and a planar antenna which will be integrated into a well-matched module by System-in-Package (SiP) using microfabrication technology. This integrated THz transmitter module will be around 300 GHz (=0.3 THz) and suitable for different applications.
